Meet APSA

APSA

This hardworking dog rescue charity that Dogwatch UK supports in Spain is called APSA, which stands for Animal Protector Society Albox.

APSA has been rescuing abandoned dogs for over 15 years in the vicinity of Albox and surrounding areas, covering at least a 70 km radius. They also take in dogs from the local pound, LIPS, in Murcia.

Their shelter can hold 40–45 dogs, and they also support local spaying and neutering initiatives for dogs and cats in the area, helping people who can’t afford these services.

The charity is run mainly by British volunteers, with four main people managing the kennels and working there daily.
Amanda, the Shelter Coordinator, and her partner work five days a week. Helen works at the weekends, and there is also a caretaker who lives on-site and checks on the dogs in the evenings. Amanda is responsible for all vet appointments, home checks, dog adoptions, and the smooth running of the kennels.

They also run a Facebook page to advertise lost and abandoned animals, as well as to promote their rescue dogs for adoption in Spain and the UK.

Other volunteers include helpers who walk the dogs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and those who run the charity shop in Albox. They also have volunteers who help with fundraising events. Like many other rescues in Spain, they use private couriers for transport.

In their homing process, Amanda handles the dog assessments and provides thorough descriptions. She carefully reviews all adoption applications and is always happy to speak with potential adopters.

The whole process of adopting one of their dogs from Spain to the UK is easy and problem-free, with support provided at every step.
